YWAM Deaf World Jamaica offers an awesome five month long program called Discipleship Training School (DTS) . It combines three months of biblical teaching in a classroom setting followed by a two month practical, usually in another country. After the DTS is complete, students can continue biblical training called Discipleship Bible School (DBS). These trainings equip the students to become leaders and full-time missionaries to share Jesus with the Deaf community around the world.
For Jamaicans and students from developing nations, the DTS tuition is approximately $5,500, which includes the training, room and board, airfare for the practical training and all expenses the students may have. The DBS adds an approximate $2,500 to the student's cost. The students are required to fundraise for this training. However, many times this is extremely challenging due to the lack of their relationships and connections. It is our mission to mobilize a support team of financial and prayer partners to be a part of sharing the good news of Jesus to the huge Deaf community who haven't heard it.
Currently, we have six students from Jamaica and South Africa in the DTS who we are raising up a team to love and support them. To learn more about each student click here to view their stories.
70 Million Deaf people in the world who use sign language as their primary means of communication
Over 300 unique sign languages in the world
Only 2% of the Deaf population are christians – this is a huge unreached group
The Deaf community has significantly lower income than the hearing community they live in
Our Mission is to train up Deaf young adults and the young at heart, by using Sign Language, to first: Know God and to love His presence and seek him above all else. And second: To Make God Known and share their passion for Jesus throughout the Deaf Community worldwide.
